Yaquina Head Light History
Midway along the rugged Oregon Coast near Newport,
a distinctive cape of ancient volcanic rock juts a mile into the sea. At its tip is Oregons tallest lighthouse. The large first order Fresnel lens in the 93 foot tall tower of the Yaquina Head Light House was first illuminated 134 years ago; on the evening of Wednesday, August 20, 1873. A light from the lighthouse tower has guided vessels nearly every night since. The lighthouse now also is an important historical artifact that attracts visitors from all over the world. Every year nearly 100,000 people climb its cast iron staircase to the top. Sadly in need of repair after more than a century of service, the lighthouse underwent a first-ever major restoration, completed in June, 2006. The federal agency responsible for the lighthouse, the Bureau of Land Management, received a special $1-million Congressional appropriation to return it to like-new condition.
